Regrets or Homesick?

When I moved to Los Angeles 10 years ago, it was to follow a dream. I took a huge risk in moving here, as did my family. It was the hardest thing I have ever done, outside of losing my parents. With my son graduating High School this year, it has made me think....what would have happened had we not moved and had stayed in NC? THAT has been a question on my mind for a long time. You see, I left my best friends in NC; sure, I have made great friends, even best friends here too, but the guilt of leaving my closest friends was HARD! Even harder was seeing my son leave his best friend behind. Life is different here, very hard, compared to NC. I work more, I am gone more, am I a good parent? Would Cameron be a different child in NC with different aspirations and goals? Did I make the right choice? All questions left to be answered and I may never know the answer. IF I do ever "make it" in LA as an actress and can truly LIVE here the way I could have lived in NC, then I may have perspective.
I've noticed that my friends call less, and I also call them less....because it just hurts. Sounds silly, but it is how I feel. I don't visit NC as often, because it hurts to go home. Maybe that is what Thomas Wolfe meant when he wrote "You can't go home again".
I am visiting NC this year, and hopefully it won't hurt too much, as I really miss everyone!

For those of you just getting to know me and just visiting my blog for the first time, I am an actress, advocate and mom! I work hard to balance it all, and it is difficult without a mom or dad myself. I lost my mom to Lung Cancer in 1996 and my dad shortly there after from, well, a broken heart. My parents were everything to me, and I am grateful to have had them, even if only a short while. I don't know what I would do without my husband, Tony, and my son, Cameron, as they keep me strong and support my efforts to make a difference, live my dream of being an actress and host. It is a daunting experience to say the least - to pursue a difficult dream - but not impossible. Every now and again you live the dream, if only a brief moment - that is what I am doing with the David Law Firm (DLF). The work they are doing to help others with Lung Cancer is amazing! When my mom was diagnosed, there wasn't anyone to help us, like the DLF (and boy, we sure could have used that help). I lost my mom in under 7 weeks and my dad less than 2 years later! Support and help is necessary during this time. It has been a chaotic year, so I am sorry that I have been away from blogging. There is so much to write and I am going to do a weekly update newsletter, starting this weekend. For now, a quick update on my life!

Here, I was promising to be better about writing, but....as always I am doing too much! Update on Janice!

April 23-26th, I attended the National Lung Cancer Partnership's Advocacy Summit in Dallas, Texas! It was 4 days of Advocacy, Awareness, Learning, and Friendship. We learned how to better spread awareness, how to better spread our message of hope and healing, how to raise funds, and how to erase the stigma. My mom died of Lung Cancer 13 years ago, next week actually, and it still seems like yesterday. I lost my best friend and protector - the one person, along with my dad, that loved me no matter what! By losing my dad only 22 months later, I feel that the disease took his life too. I have worked for 13 years for this cause, because I see other friends with their mom and dads, I see children enjoying their grandparents, and it breaks my heart! I don't wish this on anyone and Nobody Deserves Lung Cancer!!!! I am honored to be part of NLCP and hope to be a force behind the change that is needed and the CURE that WILL happen.

NOW - May 16th, I am excited that Mrs. California United States is next weekend! May 16th at 7PM in Santa Monica, CA!! This is my first year as Director, and I am so excited to Direct and Produce this glamorous event! We have 8 wonderful women, great events planned, amazing sponsors, and fantastic volunteers. I know that I don't write much on my blog these days, but that will change, I promise. I wanted to briefly send everyone a link to a great VEGAN website and Podcast. Most who know me, know I am a Vegan. I began 5 years as of April 1st to keep myself healthy, to live the way God intended, and to be compassionate toward animals! My husband, Tony, is also Vegan, and our son, Cameron is Vegetarian (by his own choice, of course).
I know there are many "nay-sayers" out there, but PLEASE look at the website and listen to the podcast, as I am sure you can understand the logic that Heart Disease is linked to animal fat, diet, and unhealthy lifestyle choices; Cancer is linked to unhealthy lifestyle habits as well. When I lost my mom and dad to these lifestyle diseases, it made me read, listen, be open-minded to changing MY choices. It's not about being thin...it is about being healthy! Well, I am once again trying new things! I accepted the responsibility of Executive Director/Producer of the Mrs. CA United States Pageant, officially about 2 months ago. As a former Mrs. United States, I truly believe in this system and feel that it celebrates married women. We can be involved with a platform, with our family and community - yet maintain a beauty, a "sexiness" that is carried with us throughout our lifetime, no matter what age! Combining beauty and brains, and adding maturity, allows us to be even more charismatic and powerful with each decade. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and the loss of a loved one...

Sorry it has been so long since my last post. This blog is meant to document volunteerism, but this has not been a good year, thus hard to post on a regular basis and equally hard to always be positive and uplifting, so please understand my need to just state fact.
I just attended the funeral of my father-in-law, Jack Ward. On May 14th, I was in Washington, DC, volunteering as a Lobbyist for Lung Cancer Awareness, when I got the call about my father-in-law. He had just been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, on the anniversary of my mother's death, YES - how is that for ironic! I know the pain my husband, Tony, is suffering and it isn't easy to lose a loved one this way.
When I told someone, they said something odd - "well, you have another cause now!" An odd thing to say, and yes I have another reason to reach out and help others, and yes, 1 in 3 people are directly affected by cancer. SO, why have I been touched by cancer so much? - with my mom, my father-in-law, my aunt, my great uncle to name a few, and I have watched both my parents die as I held their hand. I don't know why I have been touched more by this dreadful disease, but my quest is to find the answer to that question, and to do anything and everything I can to help raise awareness, funding and education along the way.

IT IS OFFICIAL: $2O MILLION FOR NEW LUNG CANCER RESEARCH NOW LAW
President Signs Government Funding Bill -- Includes top LCA priority

WASHINGTON, D.C. [September 30, 2008]--Tonight, the President signed into law funding for fiscal year 2009. Included in this omnibus measure is money to fund the Department of Defense and a new $20 million Lung Cancer Research Program.

Lung Cancer Alliance President and CEO Laurie Fenton-Ambrose called the new program “a turning point for lung cancer.”

“This is the breakthrough we have all been working so hard for – our advocates, patients and their families, our staff and our Board,” she said.

Fenton-Ambrose credited the chairmen of the House and Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittees for their support and commitment to the new lung cancer research program.

The legislation notes that lung cancer is the most lethal of all cancers, taking more lives each year than all other major cancers combined and that military personnel have heightened exposure to lung cancer carcinogens.

“Priority should be given to the development of the integrated components to identify, treat and manage early curable lung cancer”, it states.

The bill requires the Army to provide a plan for how the funds will be spent and submit that plan to Congress within 120 days.

But I am finally updating my blog! My husband, Tony, is home after almost 4 months! His dad is stable, so keep him in your prayers. Tony is going back to England at Christmas time.

My father-in-law 's cancer update...

My father-in-law's pancreatic cancer is stable. My adoring husband, Tony, has been attending to his mom and dad for the past 3 plus months (in England) -making sure they eat healthy (we are Vegan and eat mostly raw food), and helping with doctor appointments, etc... My father-in-law, Jack, went through chemotherapy and he just had a CT scan. As you know, pancreatic cancer is one of the tough ones....terminal with 4-6 months to live! He is now at the 4 month mark and is doing better than ever! We are so happy, as it is important that he has a quality of life that keeps him happy, joyful and faithful. Prayer really works, so please keep praying for my family.

A time for reflection...

I have been through a lot as of late. I competed at Mrs. International July 17-19, and I did NOT give my very best. Before I left for the national pageant, not only did my custom Sherri Hill gown not come in - stuck in customs (which is the single most stressful thing to happen before a pageant), my hair and makeup person cancelled on me last minute! But I am a strong woman, so I got a gown at the last minute, a hair and makeup person at the last minute, and hoped I would still be able to do my best....well...
I am sharing this with each of you because of the real need to reach out. My father-in-law was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer about 1 month before the pageant. He was given 4-6 months to live. My dear husband, Tony, is in England now, taking care of his dad; he left as soon as he heard. I am visiting next week for 10 days, and my son, Cameron, is staying a month there...as it may be the last time we see Grandpa Jack. My family has been struck by cancer so much - my mom, my aunt, my great uncle, my husband's grandma and now his dad.
These experiences have left me...sad....questioning life, and my purpose in this life. My blog is a tribute to my mom and dad, but I also want to reach out to each of you to pray for my husband's family, for my family, for all that suffer from cancer. Be thankful for health, love, and each other.

LUNG CANCER ALLIANCE HAILS LANDMARK LEGISLATION
Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Act Introduced in US Senate

Washington, D.C. - Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) hailed the introduction of legislation that creates the first ever multi-agency, comprehensive program targeted at lung cancer and authorizes $75 million to start the first phase of the five year program to reduce lung cancer mortality.

“This is the turning point,” said Laurie Fenton Ambrose, LCA President & CEO in thanking Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) for co-sponsoring the historic legislation, the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Act of 2008 (.pdf).

Last year both senators authored a policy resolution stating that lung cancer must be treated as a public health priority and addressed with a comprehensive program of research, better treatments and earlier detection in order to reduce its mortality rate by 50% by 2015.

That resolution, which established Senate policy on lung cancer, was passed unanimously last year. The bill introduced today builds on that resolution by establishing the comprehensive program under law and authorizing funding.

Senator Hagel, a Senate leader on lung cancer issues since 2003, said: “The federal government should implement a comprehensive policy to help reduce the mortality rate of lung cancer, which accounts for 28% of all cancer deaths in men and women in the United States.”

“We have seen great advancements in prostate and breast cancer survival rates and we must commit ourselves to making the same progress with lung cancer,” he continued. “We must bring people together and have the resources to fight this insidious disease.”

Senator Feinstein, co-chair of the Senate Cancer Caucus and a strong proponent of increased lung cancer research, said: “It’s time for the federal government to step up its efforts and make fighting lung cancer a national priority.”

“Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women, but efforts to fund research and innovative new drug therapies have been shortchanged when compared to other cancers. This bill would boost funding and expand research into the causes and treatment of this deadly scourge," she said.

The new bill cites the impact of lung cancer which kills more people each year than breast, prostate, colon, kidney, melanoma and liver cancer--combined.

The Secretaries of Health and Human Services, Defense and Veterans Affairs are required to put together the comprehensive, coordinated plan with funding authorized for five years to accomplish the mortality reduction goal.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is required to review its funding priorities in order to meet the lung cancer mortality reduction goal and more national institutes are called on directly to take part, including the National Institute of Heart, Lung and Blood, the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering and the National Institute for Environmental Health

“Anyone who has researched lung cancer knows that as important as tobacco cessation is, that alone will not eliminate lung cancer," said Fenton Ambrose.

She pointed out that 50% of new cases are former smokers and an additional 10 to 15% have never smoked.

One in five women now being diagnosed with lung cancer have never smoked.

LCA Board Chairman, Rear Admiral Phillip J. Coady, USN (Ret.), a non-smoker diagnosed with lung cancer three years ago, called the Feinstein-Hagel bill “the most important legislation ever for lung cancer.”

“This bill defines the goal – a 50% mortality rate reduction by 2015 – and gives the agencies the authority they need to get it done,” he said.

To insure accountability, the bill requires an annual report to Congress and creates an oversight board composed of the three Cabinet Secretaries and representatives from the fields of lung cancer treatment, research and advocacy.

“We are deeply grateful to Senator Feinstein and Senator Hagel,” said Admiral Coady, speaking on behalf of the Board of LCA.

“They have been the leaders in bringing congressional and national attention to lung cancer and what needs to be done,” he said.

“Bottom line,” Adm. Coady added, “it will be up to all of us now who have been affected by lung cancer, our families and friends, our caregivers, doctors, nurses and researchers to get this legislation passed into law and fully funded and make certain that the agencies stay focused on the goal.”

In addition, the bill directs the Secretaries of Department of Defense (DOD) and Veterans’ Affairs (VA) to implement an early detection and disease management program for military personnel who are at high risk for lung cancer because of smoking or exposure to carcinogens during active duty.

The bill also:

Authorizes the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to create a new Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction drug program with incentives for new treatments, targeted therapies, vaccines and chemoprevention drugs for precancerous conditions.
Requires the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to carry out an early disease research program targeted at the high incidence and mortality rates among minority and low-income populations.

The bill includes specific authorizations of $75,000,000 for certain NIH agencies in FY09 and authorizes such additional sums as may be necessary for all the cited agencies to accomplish the goal for FY 2009 through FY2013.

Here are a few more photos from my busy, busy week. After attending the NLCP Advocacy Summit and the Governor's office, I traveled up to Gary, IN to sing the National Anthem at the Gary RailCats baseball game, Gary vs. Fargo. What fun! Then onward to Hammond, IN, where I sang and spoke at the Sisters in Song Charity on May 31st. I met so many wonderful women, many touched by Lung Cancer. I was able to share my message, and my mom's story. I spoke for those who can't, for those whose lives have been taken prematurely by cancer. I dedicated the song, "My Tribute" to the men and women who have died fighting lung cancer, to my mom and dad, and to those fighting for LIFE, funding, research and treatment! Believe that it will happen, believe that the seeds we plant today will result in bountiful harvest tomorrow, believe in HOPE.

I just got home from Chicago where I attended the Lung Cancer Advocacy Summit, met with Indiana's Governor Mitch Daniels, and spoke at the Sisters in Song Charity for Women in Business. Whew! I have more photos coming, but here are a few to share with you.
At National Lung Cancer Partnership's Advocacy Summit, May 27-29, I met survivors and caregivers, like myself, that are advocating for lung cancer prevention and hope. It was an inspirational time, filled with stories, tears, and hope! HOPE - a powerful feeling and message. NLCP hosted the event, and leaders from the Lung Cancer community were in attendance.
I worked alongside the President of NLCP, Dr. Joan Schiller, as a volunteer, advocate and committee member. On the 29th, I met with Laurie Fenton Ambrose, President of Lung Cancer Alliance; we are working together on a Bill for Lung Cancer Research Funding, sponsored by Senator Barbara Boxer and Senator Chuck Hagel. I am excited to be part of this movement, and to have initiated Sen. Boxer's interest.
On Friday the 29th. I met with Governor Daniels and his Health Director, Ellen Witt. His administration is very supportive of National Lung Cancer Awareness Month and of ways we can increase funding in the state of Indiana!

United for Lung Health Advocacy Days!

May 13th and 14th were United for Lung Health Advocacy Days on Capital Hill. I represented National Lung Cancer Partnership and advocated for increased funding for the NIH and CDC, and for Lung Cancer Awareness.
I met with Senator Lugar, Senator Bayh, and Senator Feinstein's office. I also met with 7 congressmen from CA and Indiana. Everyone was very receptive to my agenda:
6.6% increase in funding for NIH (National Institutes of Health) and CDC (Center for Disease Control)
Increased funding for CMAQ (air quality Improvement)
Increased funding for DERA (Diesel Emission Reduction)
Support of the Family Smoking Prevention Act
Reinforcement of the Indoor Radon Abatement Act (one of the leading causes of lung cancer)

Most importantly, I had a face-to-face meeting with Senator Barbara Boxer, Chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee. She is a strong advocate for clean air, disease control, and cancer funding. After I shared my story about how I lost my mom, she shared that she was aware that lung cancer kills TWICE as many women as breast cancer and that lung cancer has never had adequate funding.

Senator Boxer is writing and sponsoring a Bill for Lung Cancer funding! This means NATIONAL sponsorship and funding! I am working with the DC staff to get this on the floor for voting by the next administration! Revlon Run/Walk

Today I ran a 5K to honor all women and to increase awareness of Women's Cancer - Breast and Ovarian. I am amazed by the wonderful turnout at events such as this - there were over 40,000 people there! Revlon Los Angeles is sponsored by the Entertainment Industry Foundation, EIF. Lisa Paulson with EIF spoke, along with Tom Selleck, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Halle Berry. Lisa mentioned how she had been touched by cancer in her family and that her dad died of lung cancer last year. I also met a young 17 year old today that lost her mom to lung cancer too at the age of 10. Sad...I know what they have gone through and ARE going through. Losing a loved one, so fast...it isn't fair.
I ran today because I had a lump removed from my left breast 10 years ago, I ran because I am high risk for breast and lung cancer. I ran because cancer runs in my family. What is sad is that 1 out of 7 women will get breast cancer, but sadder is that more than TWICE as many women die from lung cancer than breast cancer! My challenge to all women (and men) is to get checked, to ask your doctor questions, know if you are at higher risk, and look deeper than the breast...look at your lungs too!

What fun! I attended the Fashion Rocks the Universe at Hawaiian Tropic and Planet Hollywood. Great venue and I caught up with a few pageant friends - Holly Ernst, Robin Fleming, Suzy Bootz and more! I met Miss Universe and and the owners of Syrup Swimwear, one of the sponsors.
On Friday, I attended Miss USA with one of my friends, Renita. It was her first pageant experience, so I think I spent most of the night explaining how it all works. I saw Mrs. United America, Deanna as well! One thing I can say about Miss USA, it stays true to its tradition...pageantry at its best!

Girl Scouts of America

While in North Carolina, I spoke to a local Girls Scouts of America Brownie Troup about Volunteerism. We shared examples of how we each can give back. The girls shared how they gave toys to Toys for Tots, served meals at church, visited nursing homes, dropped off food at the local food bank, and donated food to the local animal shelters. Great ideas by all! We visited a local Girl Scout camp, where we rock-climbed (I made it to the top!), hiked and visited the camp accommodations. Funny, when I was a Girl Scout, we slept in tents, not cabins.

Wow, it has been non-stop for the past 2 weeks, so I am just now catching up! I was a Special Guest, Co-Host and Performer for the Mrs. NC United States Pageant. I sang the National Anthem, and asked the Top 5 Platform Questions. It was great to go home and visit with my NC friends and Queens. As a former Mrs. United States, I was honored to be a part of the NC tradition and to see my sister Queens- Debra, Shannon, Kelly, April, and now Nicole. I was also able to visit with Shelby (April's mom), Bria, and Stephanie Hunt. What a blessed weekend. Thanks to Cinamon and Debra for being such great friends - I wish I could visit "home" more often. Love to North Carolina and my Carolina Girls!

Lung Cancer Awareness Advocacy Summit May 27-29

The purpose of the Lung Cancer Advocacy Summit is to provide training and guidance to advocates for how to effect change at a grass-roots level. The summit will consist of teaching workshops, interactive sessions, networking, and small-group discussions. The workshops will be lead by health and research professionals, media trainers, and advocacy trainers. The topics that will be discussed include: understanding lung cancer, how to be your own health advocate, becoming a lung cancer consumer reviewer, how to de-stigmatize the disease, raising lung cancer awareness in your community, and how to navigate the legislative process.

I found a wonderful organization here in the local area, Walk with Sally, that helps kids 7-17 cope with having siblings or parents with cancer. I volunteered for the first time last night, Tuesday March 11. They teamed up with 2 other fantastic organizations, Hope Wine and Network for Hope, that each have their own wonderful way of helping others. Network for Hope brings people together, and networks with people, organizations and charities. Hope Wine combines their business and love of wine with giving back, as 50% of profits goes to certain charities. They helped sponsor the event last night and are donating 15% of wine purchased to Walk with Sally when using the code "sally" with your online purchase. I am currently going through their mentoring training program so that I can mentor children that face the realization that their parent or sibling has cancer and what that means. It is a great balance for me, as with Lung Cancer Awareness, I am mostly dealing with research and funding awareness and I really want to help others going through what I went through. Although I was an adult, the experience is similar and if I can help just one child cope and feel like they have a common bond with another, then I will feel successful.

I received a call today from Governor Daniels' Office. He signed the proclamation I sent him! Victory! This Proclamation declares November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month! I have an appointment to meet with the Governor, and I plan to address the needed funding for lung cancer research. We have to approach each state separately, but I know that in time, we will have national funding! It is a GREAT day!

Did anyone catch the Dr. Phil show last Thursday? I am embarrassed for the pageant industry and outraged at the portrayal of married pageant women. I can't speak for everyone, but I can speak for myself in that I started in pageants at 17 as an outlet to perform and earn scholarships. I won my first pageant, then went to Miss NC, then after I gave up my local title, went to college, then...living life kicked in and the next thing I knew, I had aged out of the Miss America system and was married and expecting my son, Cameron. I entered Mrs. Pageants to continue my love of performing, speaking, and working to be the best person I could possibly be. Three of my four best friends are pageant women...2 of which I met because of pageants. THAT in itself is worth more than anything and I cannot begin to put a price tag on it! My life is richer because of my friends and my involvement with pageantry...what about you?

Miss America and the REALITY of it all!

I went to Miss America last week with my dear friend, Diana. It was the most fun! We were able to go to the Tradeshow, the Breakfast, and to Contestant Visitation. We went to the Thursday Preliminary competition and Saturday Finals. I was very impressed with the girls and the organization's passion to keep the Miss America Pageant alive and popular. I was NOT impressed with how they handled the elimination of the girls or how they lined up Top 10 for Talent Competition on Saturday. I guess I am used to the glamour and grace of Miss America. However, I appreciate the need to identify with the TV audience and they LOVE Reality!
Speaking of which - this last week was very busy for me, as I was also filming a TV Pilot for the A & E Channel. Right now the show is called the Untitled Carrot Top Reality Show, but I think they will be changing that to something with a bit more zing to it. Now, for those of you who know me and know TV, this is not really a Reality Show. Most Reality Shows are based very loosely on the truth and are scripted - the same for this show. It is a lot like HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm, which is based on a real person and his life, but exaggerated a lot! My character is a Cougar Mom of a 28 year old son that is best friends with Carrot Top (can you believe it - 28!!!). My real son is 15, which is hard enough to believe. Anyway, I had my TV son, "Cookie" when I was a child myself. I'm a single mom, just going through a break up and Carrot Top and I are long time friends that help each other through our respective breakups, with a little joking along the way! If it gets picked up (which is rumored to be happening!), I will be a recurring character, but don't always believe what you see on TV, it is just a character and nothing like me at all.

Just a quick entry today to announce some exciting news:

I am so excited about this month so far! I just booked a local commercial for Mercedes, and a Pilot for A and E. The pilot is untitled as of right now, but as I know more, I will share.
I also just signed with a new commercial/host agent in town, and we finalize everything on the 28th! I will officially announce it then!
Miss America is next week and I can't wait! Then the following week, I fly to Alabama to get my Clay Spann photos!
On top of all the exciting days ahead, I also have so many things happening with Lung Cancer Awareness - I am especially excited to be a part of the upcoming Advocate Summit in May. We are working to finalize the agenda and the official name, but this will be so educational and empowering. More information to follow soon....

Living with Lung Cancer

I remember when my mom was first diagnosed with Lung Cancer; I remember the call from my aunt "to come home now". I was planning a trip home to be a bride's maid in my best friend's wedding and I needed to get home a few days earlier, as my mom had fallen, from what seemed to be a stroke. I remember walking in after a 12 hour drive to see my mom somewhat dazed and partially paralyzed. I was in shock, but I had to be the strong one, always the strong one. After countless hours at the doctors office, we were sent to an oncologist at the hospital (why I wondered, as everyone was secretive), only to have her go through tests, a biopsy, CT Scans and back to a room where I was given the news. THE news. My mom had stage IV inoperable cancer. Nothing could be done, only radiation treatments...it had spread to her brain. That is why we thought it was a stroke. When I think back on that day, I remember not being able to share that news with anyone...my mom WAS my anyone. My husband was driving up for the wedding (we didn't own cell phones then), my best friend was getting married (didn't want to depress her) and I couldn't dare tell my sweet daddy. I carried the burden by myself for some time, as my mom didn't understand all that was going on and she, well, wasn't herself.
The reason I bring up all of this sad stuff, is I ran across a blog posted on National Lung Cancer Partnership that blogs the day in the life of a cancer survivor. I found myself crying, knowing what she is going through. Yet, she is so hopeful and truthful. She has beaten the odds and has survived 6 years so far. I would have given anything to have my mom more than the 7 weeks she survived, but every person is different - with the same outcome though.
THIS is why I fight for awareness and funding for Lung Cancer! Hope. Survival. Beating the odds and living life! I only wish I had more power to make it happen faster. NOBODY deserves Lung Cancer! It is the most horrible of cancers, just read the statistics. Hope...the future...we do have that!

Make all your friends feel there is something in them worthwhile. Look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true."

New Year's Resolutions and saying goodbye to 2007

When I think back over the year 2007, I can honestly say it was a year of humility. I went through a lot this year, but each challenge was an opportunity to better myself and learn lessons I needed to learn. For the first time in a long time, I think I actually progressed and benefited from the "mistake" or missed opportunity. I became more in tune with myself, with what I truly want in life and what goals I need to focus on! I became more focused, more streamlined, more in tune with the Lord and what He wants me to do. I can't really explain it all, but I had to turn a lot over to Him. I know that in the past, I have been a bit self-serving, thinking of MY goals in MY timeframe, not His timeframe. I know now that I can't push; I have to work hard, but have more faith that things will happen. As an actress and as a pageant competitor, there is a lot of the same stress - the fear of failure.
The end of 2007 has been like taking the "lemons" of the year and making "lemonade". I have a new and terrific Manager for my acting career, I am so blessed to have the title of Mrs. Indiana International (and I know that was the title I was meant to have!), I have the love and support of friends, sponsors, and family, and I have a great job that allows me the freedom to work here and not have to travel too much! Gone is the worry that I had in 2007, and it is replaced with faith, hope, anticipation, goals, and a true desire to make a difference - not for a crown or acknowledgment, but for a bigger cause than me.

Merry Christmas from the Ward Family

Merry Christmas from Janice, Tony and Cameron. I played Flute in Church last night for the Candlelight Service at 11pm. My son, Cameron was an Acolyte for the service as well. It is so nice to be with our church family on Christmas Eve. This time of year is tough, as I really miss my mom and dad; but I am so thankful for having had them in my life and I am so thankful for Tony and Cameron and all of my wonderful friends! I am blessed. I see my mom and dad in my son's face, so I know that they are always with me and will live on through our memories and love.
On a lighter note, I am SO excited that there is movie about Alvin and the Chipmunks! When I was a little girl, it wasn't officially Christmas until I played my Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas record! I grew up in a home of wonderful music of old - Standards, Big Band, Classical Music, etc....so my exposure was to music of the past, the true greats! But Alvin was a chance for me to be a real kid and listen to silly music...I just loved it! But I was bit odd, as I also loved Cher and Vicki Lawrence (boy I am old!). I drive my husband and son crazy with my taste in music, as I still love the Standards, Jazz, Blues, Classical and the Oldies - what can I say, the apple doesn't fall very far from the tree, and my dad was a "Rat Pack" smooth crooner type from the 40's and 50's and he passed that love on to me! My mom was more of the classical influence, as she sang and played the piano. It was a nice eclectic mix that I cherish. I thank my husband for introducing alternative music to me - I may not enjoy it as much, but I love all music as it is the universal language that brings us all together.

Catching up!

Sorry it has been SO long since my last entry! I have been busy with everyday life. My son, Cameron was sick, then I was sick. Now we are Holiday busy! I love this time of year, but I miss the years when Cameron was young and Christmas was such a joyous wonder and I could see Xmas through his eyes. This time of year is tough for me. I miss my mom and dad. Somehow, Christmas is different when you grow up and REALLY different when your parents are gone. I lost them so suddenly and I wasn't ready to say goodbye. I wonder how young children deal with the loss of a parent. I was an adult with a young child and I had a tough time. I can only imagine the difficulties facing a young adult or child after losing a parent. I just found out about a local organization, Walk with Sally that helps children cope with the loss or with the sickness of a parent with cancer. I know how tough it is and how much you need others at a time like that. I hope that I can help the organization as a volunteer/mentor for a child. I know it helps me too. You never completely heal. I look forward to just listening, taking a kid to shop or fish or bowl or just watch a movie.
Anyway, NEW subject! I just signed with a Talent Manager, and she has been so great. The life of an actor is a weird one - just imagine constant interviewing as your job! And being a different person each time. It's fun and frustrating at the same time, that's what auditioning is like. You spend most of your time studying and auditioning. When you do book a job, it feels just like winning a pageant and having that crown placed on your head! Truly! I have had some great opportunities as of late, so fingers crossed. My goal is to have more of those moments. 2008 is MY YEAR!!!

National American Miss Pageant

I was asked to judge the National American Miss Pageant this past Thanksgiving weekend. I was able to judge and meet hundreds of talented young ladies at this year's pageant! So many community-minded young leaders. It is amazing to see such knowledge and wisdom at such a young age. I was able to spend some time with a friend, Tammy Caison, the reigning Ms. American Dream. We had a blast; I only wish we could have had more time at Disney, AND I wish we had remembered to take our camera to Disney. We didn't have much free time, as they kept us busy judging all the wonderful categories.

LUNGevity's LA Lung Walk 2007

My son, Cameron and I walked for Lung Cancer Awareness at the LUNGevity Lung Walk in Manhattan Beach, CA today. We joined "Team 4 1/2 Lungs", CA Lung Cancer Alliance Co-Chair Mike Stevens and the other CA advocates fighting lung cancer! I was honored to be part of such a passionate and determined group of people fighting for their life and the lives of others. Each of the 3 main members combined have only 4 1/2 lungs - hence the name - and they are each fighting to live (they never smoked, in case you are wondering!). WE were lucky enough to be able to tell our story to the media, so look for the link to the article soon. I am pictured here with my son, Cameron; Mike and me; Team 4 1/2 Lungs! The more events like this, the better the awareness and funding.

Charity Fashion Show

Free to Breathe Lung Cancer Walk

Yesterday, November 11th, I attended the Free to Breathe Lung Cancer Walk in Encino, CA. I had to be up and ready at 6am!!! so not much in the way of makeup, and I think I have on 3 layers of clothing! It was cold. I was one of the Speakers, speaking on behalf of Advocates in the USA. I shared the story of losing my mom and how awareness and treatments have changed over the past 11 years. Kathy Joosten of Deserate Housewives is a Lung Cancer Survivor and also spoke and shared her story.
I am on the planning committee for the Free to Breathe Walks, which is one of the fundraisers coordinated through National Lung Cancer Partnership. I am working to establish more throughout the country, but is takes time! If you are interested in getting an event in your state, please send a comment! Anything that can be done to raise awareness helps raise funding!

I have been very lucky in the last few weeks, I have booked a Jewelry Commercial, an Infomercial, a Furniture Commercial and this Nintendo Promo! This is my dearest friend, Cinamon Loyd. We met back in college, when we both worked at JCPenny! We modeled in a few mall fashion shows together, and she and I share the "pageant bug"! Cinamon was Mrs. NC America and I am trying to get her to enter in another pageant! Maybe in the next few years, I hope!
Cinamon is my true "sister". I just don't know what I would do without her. We take time away from our busy mommy lives on occasion and go out to a pageant or dinner. In the 1st picture, we are in Los Angeles having dinner with our handsome husbands (and acting silly). The 2nd photo is in New York City, were we saw Sweet Charity and Chicago. Fun!!!
The 3rd photo is my PR boss and friend, Carol Moore. We met back in 1999 when I was Mrs. United States and she has been a great inspiration to me. She is a woman so involved with her family and community. She handles PR and Advertising, Hosting and is a Theatre Critic - she does it all! I am so glad to know her and look forward to each and every time I travel to Indiana to work!

I was a guest of Tim and Pageant Cast today, November 6th! I know I had a lot to talk about (I just don't always know when to stop talking when I am excited about something!), and I devoted the talk to Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Having volunteered with many organizations, including ACS, Susan G. Komen, and AHA, it is great to work with an organization that is really focused on Lung Cancer. I am touched each day when I meet people that are struggling to survive cancer. I am amazed at their strength and positivity. I don't always stop and think about it. It's tough. I know it has been 11 years since I lost my mom and 9 since I lost my dad, but it still seems like yesterday. My heart is so full with love for these organizations and people; I cherish the opportunity to learn from their experiences.

A friend of mine sent me a book recently," Cure for the Common Life...Living in your Sweet Spot". I just started reading it, but it talks about the unique gifts we each bring to society. If I could wish for anything on this day and everyday is that each of us can live in our sweet spot! Be Unique!! Be yourself!

Rolling Premiere

As an actress, I spend so much of my time auditioning, marketing and filming, that it is great when I have a chance to go to an event. This is the Premiere for the movie "Rolling". I had a co-starring role, and the film is showing at Film Festivals throughout the World. My friend, Renita White was able to attend with me. Renita and I met while filming a commercial/infomercial for Reclaim. I am looking forward to the day I finally have the chance to walk the bigger Red Carpet.

As I mentioned in the previous post, my son just started High School, YES High School! He is the light of my life. He skateboards, plays soccer and golf, and the drums. I am so proud of him. He will be walking with me on November 18th at the LA Lung Cancer Walk in association with LUNGevity. I know that Cameron doesn't remember his grandma very well, but this helps him understand and remember her better. It's funny, when my mom and dad both passed away, my son said he saw angels and that it was going to be okay. I think he understands a lot more than most!

Mrs. America Pageant

I was able to attend Prelims of Mrs. America in Tuscon, Arizona this past September. It was great to see my sister queen, Laurett Arenz, Mrs. America 2002/Mrs. United States 1997. I just missed Andrea Preuss, but was able to visit with Andrea's mom, Pat Ballengee, the most fun person!! Love her! I was able to meet Mrs. World and Mrs. America, plus spend time with the NC Directors, Wendy and Fred Galle. I love pageant season; honestly it is more fun to support others than compete! I had a tough time picking a top 10 as there were so many great women at ALL the pageants this year!
My son Cameron started High School the day after Prelims, so I had to fly home and miss the the Finals, but what a nice, quick getaway.

Mrs. International Pageant 2007!

It was great fun supporting Mrs. California, Rebekah Negrete. I knew a few of the contestants, Rebekah, who won Mrs. International, Ashley, Mrs. New Mexico, and Robin, Mrs. Florida. It was especially great going to the pageant because I was able to share it with a dear friend, Diana Pizza and 2 new friends, Amy Gregorio (Mrs. Illinois US 07) and Lisa Niewolny (Mrs. Illinois US 06).

I was asked to write the Scorecard of Mrs. United States 2007 for Turn For the Judges. This was a new experience for all involved, as the pageant was outside! Stephanie Hunt was crowned the 2007 Queen, and it was a great chance to catch up with my friends. This is one of my best friends, Debra Kennedy. We met back in 1998, and are just like sisters.

This blogspot is designed to highlight my goals, dreams, passions and platform. I am an actress, mom, wife and yes a beauty pageant queen! My life is spent juggling auditions, work, volunteering and trying to keep up with my 15 year old son and his busy schedule! Whew!
I was Mrs. United States 1999 and I am the reigning Mrs. Indiana International 2008. Yep, I have been away from the world of pageant competition for along time! However I have not been away from the real reason I compete, judge, emcee, coach, and attend pageants - my wonderful friends and my platform!
I lost my mom, Margaret McQueen, to lung cancer in 1996 and I have been a tireless volunteer for lung cancer awareness ever since. I am an advocate for Lung Cancer Alliance, National Lung Cancer Partnership and LUNGevity. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, so lots of pictures and information to come!
